The same question, in a harder place
In 2022 a three-person team from Houston Community College won Intel’s Global Award — from more than a thousand entries across twenty-five nations — for a system that maps the inside of industrial buildings where GPS cannot reach. Dina-Marie Stager was the first woman to take that award in the eighteen-and-over category, and the first woman from the United States.
The problem then was a drone that could not be told where it was. The problem now is a person who cannot be told what to do. In both cases the infrastructure everyone assumes will be there — signal, power, the trained specialist — is not there.
